Groovus' Guitar

2023

Story time:

After painting my bass a few years back, my long-time friend, Jude, and I were talking about it on the smoke block at work. I told him that I wished I had more instruments to paint, because it was so much fun and, biased as it may be, I thought my bass turned out really dope.
He surprised me and told me that he had this old acoustic guitar he was gifted, he would bring it to me, and I was free to experiment with it. Total artistic freedom - fuck yeah!

It was around the end of 2019 when he brought me the guitar. Then the pandemic started, and it wasn't long after, that everyone started working remotely and the world was weird as fuck. I also started going back to school around the beginning of the lockdowns, so I never really had the time, energy, or inspiration, to devote to the work I knew was required of me, to turn this guitar into something really fucking cool.

I wanted to create something that I would be proud of, and my friend would enjoy.
I didn't want to half-ass the project, so consequently, the guitar sat in a closet for more than three years... until it didn't anymore.

When this acoustic was given to me. It was missing the strings and bridge pins. To start, I taped the bridge, sound chamber, fretboard, and the back of the guitar. (Patches says hi)

In hindsight, I should have probably sanded the guitar, but I didn't, so, here's a pic of me after I put down some black paint as a base layer. \m/

I knew it was going to be awesome as soon as I added the first color to my cup. This is just black with Blue Flash.

Cup #1 after layering all my colors.

Would ya look at that shift?! OMFG!!🥹

Cup # 2 after all the colors were added.

This was how it looked right after the pour! I used the flip cup technique - 4 cups in total and about 16 oz of paint.

This little guy immediately caught my attention!

Ain't he fuckin' cute?

Close-up of some cells.

More supercool close-up cell action.

Here is the guitar mostly dry but not quite yet ready for me to remove the tape.

Oh, did I mention that it GLOWS?! ✨

Here, I've removed the tape from the sound chamber and painted it black before adding a few layers of acrylic color changing Dragon Fly Glaze by Folk Art, topped with a few additional layers of translucent glow in the dark paint. I also outlined the outside of the ring with neon blue.

Once I was satisfied with the paint job, I sealed the guitar with two coats of Rust-Oleum Satin Clear Enamel

When the clear coats were dry, to complete the look I wanted, I installed DR Hi-Def Neon White NWA-10 Acoustic Strings and Miwayer Ebony Bridge Pins. I really like how the small abalone dots on the pins match the color scheme.

Here are some images of the finished piece in normal light and under the black light.

Thanks for checking it out! Remember to be kind to one another and in the words of my friend, "Stay Groovus"
